Emmy Fashion 2010: The Night’s Best and Worst Dressed

It was television’s biggest night Sunday evening, and the ladies dressed to impress. Black and navy gowns dominated the red carpet, with jewel tones, neutrals and bold brights helping a few actresses stand out from the crowd.

Kelly Osbourne looked fabulous in her black Tony Ward Emmy dress! (Though I’m not sure I’m sold on the hair.) Still the dress deserves major bonus points – Simple. Elegant. Amazing. It’s a good thing too. Kelly spent her time on the red carpet critiquing other actor’s looks for E!

Unfortunately Edie Falco and Anna Paquin didn’t fare as well in the black dress department. We thought Edie’s made her look too boxy and boring, while Anna’s was a little too over the top. We like the warrior inspired look, but we’d prefer to have seen Anna rock it a little more subtly, and leave the full chest-plate at home. (Plus what is with that seem going right across her waist?!)

Lo Bosworth and Stephanie Pratt were apparently also invited to the Emmy’s but failed to rise to the occasion. Lo looked like she was auditioning for a secretarial role on Mad Men, and Steph seemed to have purchased her snoozeworthy mini-dress from the sale rack of Forever 21. Why were these to there again?

Red carpet catastrophes at the Emmys

The red carpet outside the Nokia Theater Sunday evening for the 62nd annual Emmy Awards featured a harem of Grecian goddesses in white, a bevy of midnight blue ballgowns and way too many dresses that make you go "ugh."

While all of Hollywood made the effort to get dressed up, the fashion police could have handed out plenty of tickets for style violations.

Kudos to the cast of "Mad Men" for taking home the Emmy for outstanding drama series, but I have to ask if the ladies in the cast were insane when they chose those unflattering frocks for the evening’s festivities. Red carpet watchers debated all evening long about January Jones’ shiny blue Versace gown. It featured a strapless, sweetheart neckline and full, short hemline in front with a long fishtail in back. While the bodice fit like a glove, the skirt looked too much like a blue UFO hovering around her tiny waistline.

And shame on Donna Karan for tying Elizabeth Moss up in pale lilac knots, while Zac Posen might as well have tarred and feathered Christina Hendricks. The marabou that trimmed Hendricks’ shoulders and full hemline was a disaster.

Emmy Awards 2010 fashion: Black and white all over the red carpet

The 2010 Emmy Awards will not make any headlines on the front fashion, unless you count all the ladies who went the black and white route. Sometimes it worked -- Tina Fey either tries too hard or not at all, but we thought her beaded Oscar de la Renta struck the right note, interesting but not over the top. Sometimes it didn't -- did anyone else get an urge to go out for a black-and-white cookie after seeing Lauren Graham's oddly-cut number?
